How to clean & service your air conditioner
Keeping your air conditioner in good condition is important for comfort, energy efficiency and saving money. Regular cleaning and servicing can help prevent breakdowns, improve air quality and extend the life of your unit. Here’s what you need to know.
Why regular air conditioner maintenance matters
- It improves its efficiency. Dust and debris can clog filters and coils, making your unit work harder.
- You'll get better air quality. Clean filters help keep the air in your home fresh.
- It can lower operating costs. Regular maintenance can reduce energy bills and prevent expensive repairs.
- A well-maintained air conditioner lasts longer.
How often should you service your air conditioner?
Clean the filters every one to two months during peak use. Book a professional service at least once a year, ideally before summer.

For added peace of mind
Regular servicing can help keep your air conditioner running, but sometimes breakdowns happen without warning. If the motor suddenly burns out – often at the worst possible time, like during a heatwave – repairs or replacement can be costly.
GIO Motor Burnout Optional Cover can help. When added to your eligible GIO Home Insurance or Home and Contents Insurance policy, it covers the sudden burnout or fusing of electric motors in household appliances, including air conditioners.
This means GIO may cover the cost to repair or replace the motor – and in some cases, the entire appliance – helping you get things back up and running sooner.
