21 days car hire after an event

If your car is damaged and cannot be safely driven or is in for repairs or has been stolen, you can choose to:

  • allow us to arrange and pay the reasonable cost of a hire car that is a similar make or model to your car (or if a similar make or model is not available you can choose an alternative equivalent car) using our provider (but only if our provider has a car available, and is within a reasonable distance of your location); or
  • arrange a hire car using a provider of your choice.

The most we will pay is $75 per day for up to 21 days for any one incident. The cover stops when:

  • your car is returned undamaged;
  • we repair your car and return it to you;
  • we settle your claim

Comprehensive Car Insurance includes these additional features: hire car after theft (up to 21 days) and hire car after a not at fault accident (for unlimited days) where you can provide the name, address and registration details of the other driver who was at fault.

Please note: Learner drivers are not eligible to drive the hire car under this optional cover.

Windscreen and window glass replacement

When the only damage to your car is to the windscreen or window glass, we’ll cover the cost to repair or replace it without you having to pay an excess for the first claim in the period of insurance.

Where there is a chipped windscreen, that has not cracked, and can be safely repaired, we will also cover the cost of one repair without you losing your one excess free claim.

What is Comprehensive Car Insurance?

Comprehensive Car Insurance is a type of insurance that gives you cover for damage to your car and damage caused to other vehicles and property, as well as cover for theft, fire and malicious damage. It offers more features and benefits compared to Third Party Car Insurance, so you know you’re covered when you’re on the road.

Accidental loss or damage from events such as hail, storm (including cyclone), flood, fire, theft, collision and impact

Malicious damage

A malicious act is something that is done on purpose, with intent, as opposed to by accident. This includes things like graffiti or key marks on your car.

Malicious damage or vandalism

$20 million legal liability

Provides you, or someone you authorise to drive your car, with up to $20 million to pay compensation and the associated legal costs for loss or damage your car causes to another person's vehicle or property.

Towing and storage costs if your car isn’t safe to drive

Hire car after a not at fault incident

Hire car after a no fault accident (for unlimited days) where you can provide the name, address and registration details of the other driver who was at fault.

CLAIMS FREE SAVINGS

For every year that you don't make an excess payable claim, we'll give you a credit on next year's premium for that car. The longer you keep your policy with us, the greater the credit – from 5% after one year up to 20% after 15 years+ of continuous GIO Platinum or Comprehensive Car Insurance.

Comprehensive

New car after a total loss for cars less than 2 years old

If your car is stolen or damaged in an incident and we settle your claim as a total loss within the first two years of registration and you’re the first owner, where possible we’ll replace it with a brand new car of the same make and model (or similar make and model if the same isn’t available). Where this is not possible, we will instead pay the amount covered. Not applicable to GIO Platinum customers who qualify for lifetime new car replacement instead.

After claim expenses

If your car’s stolen or damaged in an incident we will pay up to a total of $1000 towards:

  • emergency travel and accommodation if your car's not safe to drive and you're more than 100km away from home. 
  • emergency repairs to make your car roadworthy or safe so that you can get to your destination or to a repairer.
  • replacing your personal property such as clothing or electronic and telecommunication devices lost or damaged at the time of the incident.

Note: You need to provide us with all invoices and receipts

Lifetime repair guarantee

If we authorise the repairs, we guarantee the quality of the workmanship and materials for the life of the car. If a defect arises as a result of faulty materials or workmanship, we will rectify the problem.
