Overview
What is Home and Contents Insurance?
GIO Home and Contents Insurance combines Home Building Insurance and Contents Insurance, offering a policy that covers both your home and the things inside it. Choose from three levels of cover, each insuring your home and contents in the event of damage caused by fire, storms, theft and more.
Fire (including bushfire)
Fire is considered burning with flames and includes damage from heat, ash, soot and smoke that is the direct result of a fire within 100 metres of the insured address. Arcing, scorching and cigarette burns are not fire damage unless a fire spreads from the initial burn spot.
There is no cover for bushfire in the first 72 hours of your policy. Very limited exceptions apply. See PDS for details.
Flood
Flood means the covering of normally dry land by water that has escaped or been released from the normal confines of things like a lake, river, or other natural watercourse. It doesn't include high tides, waves and other movements of the sea like storm surges, and we don't cover retaining walls, sea walls, garden borders and free standing outdoor walls.
There is no cover for flood in the first 72 hours of your policy. Very limited exceptions apply. Actions or movements of the sea and storm surge are not covered (unless the storm surge damage occurs at the same time as damage caused by storm). See PDS for details.
Storm
Storm surge means a rush of water onshore associated with a low pressure system and caused by strong winds pushing on the ocean’s surface.
We cover loss or damage caused by storm surge that happens at the same time as the other insured damage caused by storm.
Storm surge does not include actions or movements of the sea.

Your excess
You can choose to lower your premium by increasing your excess within a range we set. This means your premium will be cheaper, but you’ll face higher out-of-pocket costs in the event of a claim. It’s up to you to decide on a balance that suits your needs.
Payment frequency
If you pay your premiums annually, you’ll pay less than if you were to pay in monthly instalments for the same period.
Your property details
Double-check the property details listed on your policy. Things like the building materials and room sizes, which affect your premium. If there’s something that doesn’t seem completely accurate, or if you’ve made some changes or improvements, fixing that up may alter your premium. This may mean an increase or a decrease, but your policy will be accurate.

FAQ
People also ask
We provide cover for carpets under GIO Contents Insurance, but not GIO Home Building Insurance.
No, GIO Home and Contents Insurance does not cover loss or damage caused by insects, vermin, or rodents – including termites.
Your premium is calculated based on your sum insured (the amount you insure your home and/or contents for) along with many other factors, including:
- your circumstances
- your home and its contents
- the address of the insured home or unit;
- the amount you insure your home or contents for (sum insured);
- the type of insurance you have chosen (home, contents, or both);
- the level of cover you have chosen (Classic, Classic Extras or Platinum);
- any optional/additional covers you have chosen;
- construction material and other characteristics of the home or unit;
- the age of the oldest insured person on your policy;
- how the home or unit is occupied; and
- the standard excess you choose.
Collectively, these are called premium factors. We use these premium factors to estimate the likelihood of you making a claim. We also consider other factors such as the cost of claims we’ve paid to other customers, claims we expect to pay in the future, changes in taxes, duties or levies, and our cost of doing business.
