Overview
What is CTP Green Slip Insurance?
CTP Insurance – also known as Green Slip in NSW – helps cover costs related to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. So if your vehicle is involved in an accident, your CTP policy can help with things like medical costs for the people injured because of the accident. It’s mandatory in NSW, and you need to arrange it before you can register your vehicle. You can find out more about CTP insurance on the SIRA website.
Medical expenses
Payment for lost income
All people injured in an accident, regardless of fault (unless you’re charged with a serious driving offence) are eligible to claim a percentage of your pre-injury weekly income if you need time off work to recover, for up to 12 months.

The amount you pay for your CTP Green Slip includes your Premium, GST and Fund Levy.
Who needs CTP Green Slip insurance?
CTP Green Slip Insurance is compulsory for all motor vehicles registered in NSW. CTP Green Slip Insurance is not required for trailers and caravans (vehicles towed by a registered vehicle).
I have just moved to NSW. How do I purchase a CTP Green Slip?
If you have just moved to NSW and your vehicle is still registered interstate, you will still be able to purchase a CTP Green Slip to establish your registration by providing a vehicle identifier.
If you have just moved from interstate or overseas and have bought a vehicle that is registered in NSW, you should ensure that the registration has been transferred into your name prior to purchasing a CTP Green Slip policy. Failure to do so could mean you will be unable to purchase a policy.
What happens when I sell my vehicle?
CTP Green Slip insurance is linked to the vehicle, not the owner, so if you sell your vehicle, the CTP Green Slip policy will be transferred to the new owner. TfNSW automatically notifies the CTP insurer of this change.
Similarly, if you purchase a vehicle, the CTP Green Slip insurance will already be placed with a CTP insurer. Remember to contact GIO with the details of your new vehicle and we can send you a CTP Green Slip when your registration falls due for renewal.
If you have motor vehicle (not CTP) Insurance with GIO and you buy a new vehicle or sell your vehicle you need to contact us to let us know.
If you buy a new vehicle, you may wish to consider GIO for your insurance. Find out more about GIO motor vehicle insurance.
What if I'm eligible for the TfNSW automatic registration renewal?
If you are eligible for the TfNSW 'auto registration renewal' service offered to some pensioners, you need to pay your CTP Green Slip more than eight (8) days before the registration renewal date. After you pay your CTP Green Slip, we recommend you check with TfNSW directly, to confirm if your registration has been renewed.
Can I pay for 6 months instead of 12 months?
If you have a light vehicle (vehicles with GVM less than 4.5 tonnes), you have the option to choose a 6-month or a 12-month term. As long as you pay for both the CTP Green Slip Insurance and registration within 21 days of the due date, you can choose a 6 month term for the renewal of your CTP Green Slip.
If it’s been more than 21 days since your registration was due, you can only choose the 12-month period, unless there are extenuating circumstances for us to accept the late payment.
#A GIO NSW CTP Insurance policy will count as an eligible policy, however the premium for the policy cannot be discounted. View eligible policies and multi-policy discount T&Cs.
