What is ACT MAI Insurance?

Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) Insurance provides cover for costs associated with injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents. It can help affected people with treatment, care and lost income benefits for up to five years, regardless of who was at fault.

How do I get MAI Insurance?

In the ACT, MAI Insurance is included in your total registration fee paid to Access Canberra when you register your vehicle.

To choose GIO as your MAI insurer, just select GIO when you pay your motor vehicle registration.

What does ACT MAI Insurance cover?

What’s covered

  • Injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident for which you’re responsible.
  • Costs including medical treatment and lost income benefits for up to 5 years.

Who’s covered

  • Drivers – even if they’re at fault.
  • Other people injured in a motor vehicle accident including passengers, other drivers, motorbike riders, cyclists and pedestrians.

What’s not covered

  • Damage to your vehicle.
  • Damage to other people’s vehicles or property.
  • Theft of your vehicle.

These premiums are applicable for a 12-month policy and are current as at 19 March 2024.
