What is ACT MAI Insurance?
Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) Insurance provides cover for costs associated with injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents. It can help affected people with treatment, care and lost income benefits for up to five years, regardless of who was at fault.
How do I get MAI Insurance?
In the ACT, MAI Insurance is included in your total registration fee paid to Access Canberra when you register your vehicle.
To choose GIO as your MAI insurer, just select GIO when you pay your motor vehicle registration.

What does ACT MAI Insurance cover?
What’s covered
- Injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident for which you’re responsible.
- Costs including medical treatment and lost income benefits for up to 5 years.
Who’s covered
- Drivers – even if they’re at fault.
- Other people injured in a motor vehicle accident including passengers, other drivers, motorbike riders, cyclists and pedestrians.
What’s not covered
- Damage to your vehicle.
- Damage to other people’s vehicles or property.
- Theft of your vehicle.

These premiums are applicable for a 12-month policy and are current as at 9 June 2026

Cancelling your MAI Insurance means cancelling your vehicle’s registration, which you can choose to do at any time. After you have cancelled your registration it will be illegal to drive your vehicle.
You can lodge your request to cancel at your nearest Access Canberra Service Centre.
MAI Insurance is linked to the vehicle, not the owner, which means if you sell your vehicle the MAI Insurance will be transferred to the new owner. If you buy a new vehicle, the MAI Insurance will be transferred to you.
Just make sure that you advise Access Canberra.
As your MAI Insurance is linked to your registration, you should update your address, phone number and other contact information with Access Canberra.
