Does car insurance cover hail damage?

There’s not much we can do to prevent wild weather, especially in Australia, where we swing from scorching heat to hailstorms. But we can take steps to get cover for the resulting damage.

As mentioned earlier, hail damage is covered under both GIO Platinum and Comprehensive Car Insurance. In the event of a claim, you’ll have your choice of repairer, as well as a hire car after the theft of your car or a not-at-fault incident (if the car can’t be safely driven and you can give us the name, address, and vehicle rego of the person at fault). The amount of time this hire car will be available to you depends on the level of cover in your policy.

What if only the window glass parts of your car are damaged by hail?

If you have GIO Platinum Car, or have purchased this optional windscreen and window glass with GIO Comprehensive Car, you can make an excess-free claim, as long as it’s your first ‘windscreen and window glass cover’ claim in a period of insurance.

How to lodge a claim

1.    Submit your claim here or through the GIO App. With the new app, you can lodge, track and review your claim on-the-go, anytime, anywhere. You can also opt in for hail (and other extreme weather) alerts for your insured address in-app. 

2.    Wait for us to assess your claim. We’ll determine whether it’s better to repair or replace the car.

What happens if my car is a write-off?

It all depends on the extent of the damage, as well as the value and age of your car.

In some cases, if you hold a GIO Platinum policy and fit our eligibility criteria, we’ll replace your car with a brand new one of the same make and model (if available), or find something similar if we can’t repair it.* If you’re eligible, this will apply no matter how old your car gets.
