Clearing Gutters and Downpipes
In the event of a storm, your gutters and downpipes may need to be cleared because leaf litter build up can prevent water from flowing and may cause damage to your outdoor plumbing over time so, when it’s safe to do so, clear your gutters and downpipes.
Protecting Your Roof
Surface imperfections may mean your roof isn’t structurally sound and could lead to damage in a storm. If you see any imperfections, call a professional roofing inspector to assess the condition of your roof.
Trimming Branches
In the event of a storm, heavy winds can turn nearby objects into projectiles. If there are trees or branches too close to your home, consider trimming the branches or cutting them down to avoid them hitting or falling onto your property. If you’re considering chopping down an entire tree, consult your council first.
Securing Items
Loose items around your home can be swept up by heavy winds. Secure large objects like trampolines, lawn mowers and mailboxes to the ground using rope. Or move the objects to the garage.
Staying Alert
In the event of a storm, electricity can be cut. Purchase a battery-operated radio to stay up to date on developments in and around your area. You can also purchase battery operated torches and store them in easily accessible locations.
