INSURING YOUR HOME
Keeping your laptop insured on the go
Laptops are an essential part of our daily lives. But their portable nature can increase the risk of drops, spills, loss or theft when we take them on the go.
Whether you’re at home or out and about, it may be worth considering laptop insurance. Here’s why.
Why laptop protection matters when you’re on the move
Laptops are designed to be portable, but that also makes them vulnerable. Common risks include:
- accidentally dropping or knocking your device
- liquid spills, especially when you use your local café as your office
- theft from cars or public spaces
- loss or damage while travelling, and
- cracked screens.
A brief distraction can lead to unexpected costs. That’s why understanding your coverage is crucial and the right insurance cover can make the difference.
Does my home insurance cover laptop damage?
Home insurance alone typically covers for the building, so walls and permanent fixtures. It doesn’t cover for damage or loss of contents, like your laptop.
Contents insurance covers for your belongings. And even if you have contents insurance, the answer depends on:
- the type of contents insurance you have
- whether the laptop is at home or taken away from home, and
- the optional covers you’ve added.
If you have GIO Home and Contents Insurance or GIO Contents Insurance, your laptop is covered inside your home for insured events such as fire or theft. The Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) explains all inclusions, limitations and conditions for the policies.
How to cover your laptop when you’re away from home
If you take your laptop (and other items like mobile phones, tablets, watches or glasses) away from home, our Unspecified and Specified Portable valuables covers are optional covers you can add to your Classic or Classic Extras policy for an extra premium, which can help cover them when you’re on the go.
These optional covers can help insure against events such as:
- accidental loss or damage at and away from home, and
- theft away from home.
You can choose between three tiers of cover:
- Classic
- Classic Extras, or
- Platinum Contents.
Platinum Contents, our highest level of cover, will cover your belongings whether they’re at home or anywhere else in Australia or New Zealand and you don’t need to list your portable items (unless the replacement cost is above the policy limits noted in the PDS).
Portable Valuables optional cover added to your Classic or Classic Extras policy or Platinum contents cover can offer added reassurance when your personal laptop is essential to your daily routine. Explore your cover options with GIO.
