How to avoid electrical hazards in the home

Electricity powers our lives, but when things go wrong, the consequences can be severe – fires, injuries, and expensive repairs. The good news? Most electrical hazards can be prevented with a few simple steps. Here’s how to keep your home safe and your family protected.

Inspect cords and appliances regularly

Damaged cords and faulty appliances are among the most common causes of electrical fires. Look for frayed wires, cracked plugs, or scorch marks on the electrical components. Replace damaged cords immediately and avoid using appliances that spark or overheat.

Avoid overloading power points

Plugging too many devices into one socket can cause overheating and even start a fire. Use power boards with overload protection and spread devices across multiple outlets. If you notice flickering lights or warm sockets, call an electrician.

Keep water away from electricity

It’s worth remembering that water and electricity are a dangerous mix. Wet hands or damp areas increase the risk of electric shock. Dry your hands before touching switches and keep appliances away from sinks, bathrooms, and outdoor wet areas.

Be cautious with electric blankets

Electric blankets are another serious fire hazard, especially if they’re old or damaged. Check for exposed wires, avoid folding them, switch them off before sleeping and consider replacing blankets older than 10 years.

Hire a licensed electrician for repairs

DIY electrical work can be dangerous and is never a bright idea. Always call a qualified electrician for installations or repairs. It’s safer and ensures compliance with Australian standards.

Install safety switches

Safety switches – also known as Residual Current Devices (RCDs) – cut power instantly during a fault, reducing the risk of shock or fire. Test them every three months to ensure they’re working properly. If your home doesn’t have safety switches, arrange installation immediately.
