INSURING YOUR CAR

Is there a CTP pensioner discount?

22 November 2021

CTP legislation states that all CTP policies must be paid at the full amount. So, while there are no pensioner concessions on CTP Insurance, you may be eligible for other discounts when you purchase CTP Insurance depending on the insurer.

With GIO, when you combine a GIO Comprehensive or GIO Platinum Car Insurance policy with an NSW CTP Green Slip on the same car — that is, with the same registration, you can get a $50 discount* off your next car insurance premium.

Other car insurance discounts

Again, there aren’t any specific discounts available to pensioners, but you may be eligible for other discounts on your car insurance with GIO. This may include:

  • multi-policy discount^ when you combine any three or more paid eligible policies like GIO Comprehensive or GIO Platinum Car Insurance policy with an NSW CTP Green Slip on the same car plus another eligible policy. GIO NSW CTP counts as an eligible policy but the premium for it cannot be discounted. Learn more. [Note: Link "Learn more" to MPD page: https://www.gio.com.au/multi-policy-discount.html]
  • a discount for buying your insurance online, and
  • claim free savings for each year you don’t claim.

More info on CTP Insurance

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) provides coverage for at-fault drivers against any compensation claims from individuals who are injured as a result of a motor vehicle accident. It doesn’t cover the cost of damaged vehicles and property.

It comes with your vehicle registration in most states (except NSW and the ACT). In other states like Victoria, CTP insurance is included as part of your registration fee where it is administered by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC). The TAC is the sole insurer for CTP in Victoria.

In NSW, you have to purchase your own CTP insurance – a Green Slip. Same goes in the ACT where it is known as Motor Accident Injuries or ‘MAI insurance.’

What is a Green Slip?

A Green Slip is another name for CTP Insurance in NSW. As above, a Green Slip protects the driver of a motor vehicle from liability if they were to injured or cause the death of a person (or persons) in a motor accident. You need a Green Slip to register a motor vehicle in NSW.

Head to the NSW Government’s SIRA website for more information on Green Slips and the different types.

Making sure you have the right Car Insurance

Being over 60 can bring both the good and bad to your car insurance premiums. It’s important to understand how this can affect your policy, and your premiums.
