OVERVIEW
What's changed?
We’re using more information we’ve sourced from third parties. This means:
- if you’re buying a new policy, we won’t ask you as many questions about your property as we used to, and
- if you’re renewing an existing policy, there will be fewer details for you to check on your building’s Certificate of Insurance.
You’ll see this change in policies commencing on or after 13 May 2022 or renewed on or after 23 June 2022.
What hasn’t changed?
We still cover your home or property at the insured address up to your selected sum insured. This includes things like decks, fixed swimming pools, sheds, tennis courts, and fixed water tanks (even though they no longer appear on your Certificate of Insurance). Please refer to your PDS for full details of your cover.
You still need to make sure your cover is right for you, including your sum insured. Refer to the FAQs below to learn more about keeping your sum insured up to date.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I select the most appropriate building sum insured?
You can use GIO’s building calculator to get an estimated cost of rebuilding your home. To get a more accurate cost, consider seeking the services of a relevant qualified professional, such as an architect, builder, quantity surveyor, or valuer.
When insuring your home you can choose a sum insured you’re comfortable with within a range, which is determined by a number of factors including the size, build quality and location of your home. Your sum insured can be updated online through GIO Online Services or by calling us on 13 10 10.
Why has my sum insured amount changed at renewal?
We usually increase your sum insured at renewal to account for the increased annual cost of rebuilding. If you’re unsure whether the amount is correct or whether your sum insured is suitable for your situation, refer to the above FAQ “How do I select the most appropriate building sum insured?” for suggestions.
Where does information you collect about my property come from?
We collect information from you, publicly available sources, and from suppliers when we’re required to learn details about your property.
How do your suppliers source information about my property?
Our suppliers take aerial images of Australian homes and then use artificial intelligence to identify building attributes, such as pools or tennis courts. Similar aerial information – also known as geospatial data – is commonly used for things like Google maps GPS tracking, storm warnings, and weather maps.
Do I have to give permission for you to use this data?
No. We can collect information directly from customers, publicly available sources and from suppliers when necessary. But rest assured – we take privacy very seriously and ensure the protection of our customers’ personal information. For more information on how data is collected and used, refer to the relevant GIO Privacy Statement.
I’m not sure I like this change. What should I do?
If you aren’t satisfied with our products, services, or a decision we’ve made, don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll do our best to help.
