Insured events

What's covered - Events

Flood

‘Flood’ means the covering of normally dry land by water that has escaped or been released from the normal confines of a lake, dam, river. We do not cover floods in the first 72 hours of cover, and there are some things we don’t cover loss or damage to including: retaining walls, sea walls, garden borders and free-standing outdoor walls. Read the PDS for full details.

Storm or storm surge

Storm means a storm, cyclone, or severe atmospheric disturbance. It can be accompanied by strong winds, rain, lightning, hail, snow, or dust.

Storm surge means a rush of water onshore associated with a low-pressure system and caused by strong winds pushing on the ocean’s surface. It does not include actions or movement of the sea. The loss or damage caused by storm surge must happen at the same time as the other insured damage caused by storm.

We do not cover storm or storm surge in the first 72 hours of cover. Read the PDS for full details.

Lightning

We cover loss or damage caused by lightning (including a power surge caused by lightning), provided that a qualified repairer gives written confirmation to show lightning as the cause of loss or damage and the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology has a record of lightning in the area.

We don’t provide cover for loss or damage caused by power failure or surges by your power provider. Please read the PDS for more information.

Fire (including bushfire)

Fire means burning with flames. We provide cover for loss or damage from heat, ash, soot, and smoke that is the direct result of a fire within 100 metres of the insured address. We don’t cover loss or damage from things like arcing, scorching or cigarette burns. If there is a bushfire in your area, we also cover the costs of replacing water in any tank, container, pool, spa, or other storage vessel where the water has been used to limit the spread of bushfires in your area, and the cost of cleaning any fire retardant off your home.

The most we will pay under Extra Costs cover is $1,000 for any one incident, read the PDS for more information. We don’t provide cover for bushfires in the first 72 hours of your policy.

Earthquake and Tsunami

We cover damage caused in the first 72 hours after an earthquake or tsunami. A tsunami is not considered an action or movement of the sea.

Theft or burglary

Theft or burglary occurs when someone enters the insured address without your consent and steals or intends to steal items. We don't cover loss or damage caused by anyone living at the insured address, and there are other exclusions so please read the PDS for full details.

Impact

We cover damage caused by an impact from a falling tree, an object falling from a car and even space debris at the insured address. However, we don’t provide cover for loss or damage caused by trees being lopped, felled or transplanted by you – read the PDS for more information.

Escape of liquid

This covers loss or damage caused by sudden and unexpected liquid escaping from certain appliances, fixed pipes, drains and more.

We also cover loss or damage caused by liquid escaping from these items that has occurred gradually when the loss or damage that was occurring wasn’t easily visible to a reasonable person in the circumstances.

We don’t provide cover for loss or damage caused by liquid escaping from a shower floor or base – refer to the PDS for more information.

These are summaries only, and limits, conditions and exclusions apply. For more info refer to the PDS.

Home

What's covered - What’s included as part of the home?

Temporary accommodation when you have home cover

If your home is damaged and can’t be lived in due to an incident covered by your policy, we’ll cover the reasonable and necessary temporary accommodation costs for both you and your pets while your home is being repaired or rebuilt.

Our maximum payout for any one incident is 10% of the home sum insured with Classic and Classic Extras cover and 15% of the home sum insured with Platinum cover. Further cover may be available during delays outside of your control when we have appointed a builder to rebuild or repair. Any payment for temporary accommodation is on top of your sum insured, so won't take away from how much you'll have available to rebuild or repair your home. Please read the PDS for details.

$20 million legal liability cover

Provides up to $20 million to pay compensation, including all associated legal costs, for death of or bodily injury to other people, or loss or damage to their property, resulting from an incident which happens during the period of insurance in connection with certain situations. Applies to home cover. Please read the PDS for full details of the terms, conditions and exclusions.

For example, if you have home cover and during the period of insurance, someone falls down your stairs and sustains bodily injury, and you’re held legally liable, we pay compensation if damages were sought from you. Read the PDS for full details.

New for old replacement

New for old means:

  • New materials, new items;
  • New for old, regardless of age;
  • Same type, standard and specification as when new (or if not reasonably available from an Australian supplier, similar type, standard and specification).

For a full definition of ‘new for old’ and for how we settle home and contents claims, refer to the PDS.

Accidental breakage of glass

Glass breakage that occurs by accident, i.e., that you did not intend or expect to happen.

When you have home cover, we cover things like fixed glass in windows, fixed mirrors, sinks and the glass parts of fixed cooking appliances. We don’t cover things like glass in a greenhouse, drinking glasses and chips or scratches to the surface of the glass.

If you have selected the optional cover 'Excess-free Glass cover’, you may not have to pay an excess when your claim is only for accidental breakage of fixed glass in windows, doors, skylights, shower screen, mirrors fixed to the home, or other fixed glass (including glass tint if fitted). For full details, refer to the PDS.

These are summaries only, and limits, conditions and exclusions apply. For more info refer to the PDS.
