What happens if I lose an insured item away from home?
There are a few reasons your belongings may be damaged or lost while you're away from home. If you're moving to a permanent new address, for example, and your contents are damaged or lost during transit within Australia, you'll be covered under GIO Contents Insurance for events such as fire, flood or theft of the vehicle carrying them. This also applies to contents in commercial storage, or contents that are temporarily removed from your property for up to 180 days.
Portable Valuables that you normally carry with you when you're away from home aren't always automatically covered, however GIO offers 'Portable valuables' as an optional cover which you can add to your policy for an extra premium. This can cover loss or damage to jewellery, mobile phones, cameras and laptops away from home, up to the amount specified in your policy (view the PDS). It also covers bicycles even when in use (except if you are racing).
