GIO boosts injury management professionals

GIO is investing heavily in the professional development of staff who manage personal injury claims in order to improve service quality. A capability program is underway that has enrolled over 100 people across the Suncorp Group in tertiary education and there are plans to significantly increase this number in 2012.

“Managing personal injury claims is always challenging because rather than damaged property, we’re dealing with injured people and their families,” said Mr Paul Smeaton, Executive General Manager Statutory Claims with Suncorp Commercial Insurance.

“It requires a highly trained, professional workforce to do it well and that’s exactly what we’re achieving with this program.”

The courses being undertaken by GIO’s workers compensation and CTP claims staff include Certificate III in Financial Services, Certificate IV in General Insurance, Diploma in Personal Injury Management and Master of Management (Personal Injury).

The diploma is being provided in partnership with the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF).

“We’ve seen a clear commitment from Suncorp to up-skilling their personal injury workforce," said Mr Mark James, General Manager - Client Solutions, ANZIIF.

“Investments of this sort raise productivity and ultimately it’s customers who benefit from having highly educated people managing their claim," he said.

“Suncorp is a great example of an insurance organisation catering for all roles across their company and providing continuous opportunities for staff to take their next step in a comprehensive career pathway,” Mr James said.

Suncorp has increased its internal training capacity as well as using external training providers such as ANZIIF and the Personal Injury Education Foundation (PIEF). Several staff members have secured scholarships for their Masters from WorkCover NSW.

“Suncorp has the responsibility as Australia’s largest personal injury insurer to raise service standards and move the industry forward,” said Mr Smeaton.

“Personal injury claims management is a specialised skill and we recognise the need to continually enhance the knowledge and qualifications of our people.”
