How monthly payments work

The policy is an annual contract paid in monthly instalments by direct debit from your account or regular charges to your credit card.

Your first payment will be deducted/charged approximately 10 days after GIO receives your direct debit request or credit card authorisation if paying by credit card. Two payments may be deducted/charged in the first month depending on your payment date. The second and subsequent payments will be deducted/charged on the same payment date each month.

Fees A pay by the month fee per policy applies. No discounts apply to the fee. Annual and monthly premiums will be detailed on your Quotation and Application or your Certificate of Insurance form.
Annual renewal process

You will be sent a renewal notice prior to the expiry of your policy. On receipt of the renewal notice, simply check that the details are correct. Monthly instalments will continue to be debited from your account or charged to your credit card. If you wish to vary these arrangements please call us on 13 10 10 or write to:

Important Information
  • Overdue Payments

Your financial institution may charge a fee if there is not enough money in your account when the monthly payment is due.

An overdue payment on one policy may impact the deductions of payments on other policies linked to the same bank account.

If an instalment of the premium remains unpaid for a period of at least one month we may cancel the policy from that date.

If an instalment of the premium remains unpaid for a period of at least 14 days GIO may refuse to pay a claim.

  • Total Loss

If we decide repairs are not economical for your motor vehicle or boat, or we pay out a claim for the full sum insured on your home, we can deduct the remaining instalments due for the full period of insurance from the amount we pay for the claim and your cover then stops.

  • Change Of Account Details

If your bank account details change you will need to contact us at least 10 days before your next instalment. If your credit card details change you must contact us at least five days before your next due instalment.

  • Changes to Terms and Conditions

We will provide you with 14 days notice if we change any of the terms of the direct debit.

  • Fees

A pay by the month fee per policy applies. No discounts apply to the fee. Annual and monthly premiums will be detailed on your Quotation and Application or your Certificate of Insurance form.

Direct Debit request service agreement

You have requested GIO General Limited (User ID Number 045102) ("we or us") to debit, through the Bulk Electronic Clearing System (BECS), any payments for your insurance contract(s) that may from time to time become payable from the account nominated in your Direct Debit Request.

We advise you that:
(a) Direct debiting through BECS may not be available on some accounts. Additional charges may be applied by your Financial Institution for direct debits.
(b) You should confirm the account details by checking a recent statement from your Financial Institution.
(c) Your request must be authorised in the same way as the account signing instruction held by your Financial Institution.

If you are uncertain about any of these items please check with your Financial Institution before contacting us. You are responsible for ensuring that the account you nominated has sufficient cleared funds available to pay each debit when it becomes due. You must tell us if you close or change the account you nominated.

Where the due date falls on a non-business day in Sydney and Melbourne, we will debit the amount on the next business day. If you are uncertain when the debit will be processed to your account, you should contact your Financial Institution directly.

You may cancel your Direct Debit Request, stop or defer an individual debit or request a change to the debit amount by calling us on 13 10 10 or writing to us at:

We must receive your notification at least 10 business days prior to the next due date to process your request in time.

If you believe that a debit has not been correctly processed you should contact us immediately on 13 10 10. If you are not satisfied with our reply, you should contact your own Financial Institution.

If debits are returned unpaid by your Financial Institution we will either attempt to debit from your nominated account again or we will contact you to arrange another way of paying. If an instalment of the premium remains unpaid for a period of at least one month we may cancel the policy. We reserve the right to cancel the Direct Debit arrangement if 3 or more debits are returned unpaid by your Financial Institution.

We will keep all information relating to your account private and confidential. You consent to us using or releasing your account information to investigate any claims relating to possible incorrect debits.

You fully indemnify us against any losses, costs, damages and liability that we suffer as a result of you giving us incorrect or false information in your Direct Debit Request. Your indemnity continues after this Agreement is ended.

These arrangements are subject to change. We will provide 14 days notice of any changes.
