At GIO, we care about your business and we're here to provide insurance protection and claims response should a fire occur. Read the fire tips below to prepare your business for the unexpected.
Fire Prevention
- Nominate a fire warden.
- Train staff on fire safety and evacuation procedures.
- Ensure fire extinguishers, electrical circuits & hose reels are regularly maintained.
- Have fire blankets & extinguishers in kitchens and near machinery.
- Assign designated safe smoking areas.
- Correctly store hazardous goods.
- Keep all exits clear.
- Maintain clean & tidy workplace.
- Do not stack pallets, have bush or garbage bins close to the building.
When a Fire Happens
- Evacuate the building, removing people from danger.
- Account for all staff and ensure safely away from the fire.
- Call 000, clearly & calmly ask for fire or ambulance response, explain the situation, provide address, directions and a mobile phone number.
- Notify surrounding neighbours.
- Turn off gas/flammable fluids, electricity, gas cylinders.
- Only if safe, attempt to remove business records.
- When leaving the building, if safe, shut (don?t lock) doors and windows.
- Fight fire using extinguishers & fire blankets ONLY if safe.
After a Fire
- Enter your business only after emergency services announce it is safe.
- Secure your business from looting.
- Prepare full details of how the fire or injury occurred.
- Call GIO Claims on 13 14 46 and provide full details of incident & any loss.
- If you have business interruption cover, request an interim emergency payment to cover immediate costs.
