At GIO, we understand that boating mishaps don’t just happen at sea. That’s why we not only cover many types of boats, but also cover them in and out of the water. We can insure your runabout, power boat, cruiser, yacht, trailer sailer or catamaran with a policy that covers your hull, accessories and equipment, contents,  sails, motors and boat trailer.

Types of Boat Cover:

Essential Boat Insurance

Essential Boat Insurance provides cover for your legal liability for death or injury of another person or damage your boat accidentally causes to other people’s property up to $10 million.

Comprehensive Boat Insurance

Comprehensive Boat Insurance provides cover for accidental loss or damage, fire, theft or attempted theft, malicious damage or storm damage to your boat. Comprehensive cover also includes Essential cover as outlined above.

2 year new boat replacement If your boat is a total loss and is less than 2 years old, we’ll replace it with a new one of the same make, model and specifications.
Accessories and equipment are covered

Automatic over
We pay up to $2,000 per item, up to a maximum of 5% of the hull sum insured for all items

For more cover
You can ask us to increase cover by listing the item on your certificate of insurance with a separate sum insured

Accessories include: boat canopies & storm covers, paddles, batteries, mandatory safety equipment and portable fuel tanks

Equipment include: depth sounder, marine radio/transceiver, navigation equipment and fish finders.
Cover for boat contents Automatic cover

We pay up to $250 per item, up to a maximum of 5% of the hull sum insured for all items

For more cover

you can ask us to increase cover by listing the item on your certificate of insurance with a separate sum insured

Contents we cover
Portable refrigerator, microwave oven, television, glassware, crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, portable household goods, clothing, appliances and fishing, diving & water-skiing gear.
Rescue expenses We’ll pay up to $5,000 for the fees charged by a maritime rescue service to find or rescue you and your boat, when you and your boat are lost or reported missing.
Choose to make one annual payment or to pay by the month At GIO we give you the choice of payment options. You can choose to pay one annual payment or monthly instalments. Learn more about Pay by the Month (fee applies).

Key features of Essential cover
Cover when replacing your boat We provide up to 14 days cover on your replacement boat on the same level of cover you had for your previous boat.
Automatic cover for a substitute boat If your boat is being repaired or serviced, we will cover your legal liability when you are using a substitute boat. It does not cover any damage to the substitute boat.
Salvage and removal costs We’ll pay up to $10 million for the reasonable and necessary costs to salvage and remove your boat when it is stranded, sunk or burnt in an incident and you are legally responsible for salvaging or removing it.
Choose to make one annual payment or to pay by the month At GIO we give you the choice of payment options. You can choose to pay one annual payment or monthly instalments. Learn more about Pay by the Month (fee applies).

  • Multi-policy discounts

    Receive a 5% discount off your premium if you hold 3 or more eligible insurance policies with GIO. Click here for details of eligible policies.

  • Seniors Card discount

    GIO offers Seniors Card holders a 10% discount off their boat insurance.

  • Increase your excess

    By increasing your excess within the range of excess amounts we offer, you can reduce your comprehensive boat insurance premium.

Optional Covers

GIO also offers a range of optional covers with our comprehensive cover that may be available to you depending on your circumstances.


  • Waters skiers liability

    By choosing this option, your legal liability cover is extended to include cover when your boat is towing a water skier

  • Racing cover

    This option extends your comprehensive cover to insure your sailing boat when it is participating in a race.

  • Lay-up periods

    You can reduce your premium if you do not use your boat for parts of the year and it is stored at your home during this period. You can nominate a lay-up period up to 6 months a year and your cover will be restricted during this period.
